As I was watching my Netflix last week, I noticed a weird pop up that was not there before! I wanted to see what’s new on Hulu so I clicked “Exit/Return” on my remote. The pop up was actually the left side menu which prompted the user (myself) to navigate by clicking left then clicking down, down, down, well you get the point…

How do users feel about having to put in extra work just to voluntarily exit the app? I mean, we already pay for it, why need to control where we want to navigate?

Many companies are in fierce competition. Customer ratings are up and down with the widespread of new features, which may or may not work on your interface. To keep their customers they are willing to do whatever it takes. Dark Pattern design is creative, I’ll give them that.

Netflix has amassed over 60 million viewers over twice as much as Hulu’s 26 million, J.Clemen’s writes. The numbers speak for themselves, Netflix does not need dark designers. Time and time again we learn that consumers control the market. UX should be dedicated to customer satisfaction at all cost.
