Definitely! The more I’ve been consistent and confident about “using my idea muscle” the more I’ve realized I have tons of ideas that I had been ignoring automatically because they were “kinds of writing I don’t do.” Screw that!
This week, I went from humming to myself in the car to writing a sea shanty, and a song came out that I love so much that I memorized it and used it as a lullaby for myself last night.
I needed to write comedy material for a roast recently, and I realized that instead of “jokes” I could write a long poem mocking the roastee. It went over splendidly.
I also helped a friend revise a fanfic, wrote a few narrative comments on Medium, and started a new volume of my paper journal with the explicit intent of writing a single, continuous essay using the entire notebook. Quips, dream diaries written as movie pitches, quotes, song lyrics, musings, fears, lists — all of them go somewhere and writing each of them gives me practice with another tool in my writer’s belt. Varying the style and intent of my output is opening up so many new worlds of topics and formats that I feel like I need to put my life on hold just to write them all down!
