Ask that dumb question

But be prepared to get your hands dirty.

I spend my days asking the grand questions. Sometimes they are dumb questions, but they provide an invaluable perspective that nobody was thinking about.

Recently, I was running an implementation project. We, as a team, asked grand questions.

Questions like “Is this going to provide value to the people that are going to use what we create?”…..

It is extremely important that your constraints don’t come in the way of your vision. Be wild, get out of your and your team’s comfort zone.

“People don’t know what they want until you show it to them.” — Steve Jobs

That quote is the reason why I say “Be prepared to get your hands dirty, ” because you will come up with something unrealistic from other people’s perspective. Now, you will need to prove that it is possible. You as a leader will need to do the work along side your team and put in the efforts needed to achieve your vision. I love my parent’s advice to me as a child “Don’t expect things for free.”

Now comes the final part of this journey, some of your grand vision is not achievable. And sometimes, in hindsight, you will realise that even after getting your hands dirty the vision is partly unrealistic. People will criticize your vision.

Ignore the politics, learn your lessons and move on to the next grand vision.

Because it is more important to have grand vision. That is what inspires the team not the politics.
