Global Content (wk5)

Majority of the people I know, have downloaded something off the Internet; movies, music and even software programs. However we do not look down upon illegal downloading, in the same way that we would shame and name an individual who stole an item from a store. Why is this? I believe it comes down to our attitudes. It would appear that despite the current law, majority of our population find downloading appropriate and we have a developed a generation of people who believe we simply have a right to download any content we wish. So if society doesn’t view downloading a crime, then why wouldn’t the law reflect society’s views like it is originally supposed to? Basically because there is more to the story than simply downloading content. Consider the artists, producers and creators of the content. Surely a movie director, musician, studio, actor or design deserves to be paid for their hard work and property. So with that said, we are left considering both sides of the issue. I believe there should definitely be more boundaries and the culture of believing we have a right to all content unlimited, needs to change. It’s a wonder how no one has suggested a legislation where there is a compromise. For example; for the time a movie is initially released into the box office, then to D.V there should not be any free downloads allowed. Then after sales have saturated in a period of time, the content becomes free to access legally.
