Trump’s SNAP Proposal Shows He’s Never Struggled a Day in His Life

Trump’s outrageous proposal to slash SNAP benefits from starving families is wrong in so many ways; it seems that all he cares about is finding a way to pay for the tax handout he just gave to America’s millionaires and billionaires. Time and again, it has been proven that SNAP benefits are the most valuable government stimulus we can have for local economies. Instead, big government intrusion into the lives of America’s most vulnerable denies our ability to choose the foods that are culturally and socially appropriate.

SNAP benefits help local economies because the benefits are spent at local grocery stores — with locally grown and locally-made products. I remember many years ago, while on food stamps, I advocated for the benefits to be spent at local farmers markets — a move that has helped local economies even more. As a proud New Mexican, my food choices also take into consideration the ways in which our New Mexican culture affects our food choices.

The fact that the Trump food box will contain “shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables,” is an insulting proposal that ignores the 1 in 13 of American children who have food allergies, many including nut and gluten allergies. And we shouldn’t forget the over 1.5 million Americans who are Vegan and do not consume milk.

The Republicans cry for smaller government; however, it seems that at every turn, they work at interfering with the lives of Americans, and we can add food-choice to the list.
