Hope Firsel has had her fair share of unexpected traumatic events. Individually, each trauma had the ability to crush her. Somehow, she weathered through, but not only that, she thrived through it mentally stronger.

Children

Firsel and her husband spent years trying to give birth to children naturally. After IVF treatments and numerous clinic visits, finally her doctor told them it was time for other options.

They chose surrogacy. It’s not something one takes lightly, either. There is a lot of detail involved in finding the right person. They had two children through the same surrogate.

Cancer

The C word is not something anyone wants to hear, especially when you have two children under three. However, after extensive treatment and the miracle of medicine, Firsel managed to win her battle with colon cancer.

Divorce

After weathering the storm of infertility and cancer, Firsel and her husband parted ways. Their 18-year marriage was not in vain. Their divorce was amicable, and they are still partners in raising their children together.

The dissolution of their marriage meant they still had to live with each other during the uncertain times of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Interview

Firsel originally booked her interview with me for April 4. We had to postpone it until April 10. Why? Yet another unexpected event, and one that is all too common for Americans. Her children’s school was under lockdown, and she had to race to pick them up during what was thought to be an active shooter drill.
