…concerns me is not just the violence being done to children here, although that concerns me deeply. What concerns me is that this is just one aspect of a kind of infrastructural violence being done to all of us, all of the time, and we’re still struggling to find a way to even talk about it, to describe its mechanisms and its actions and its effects. As I said at the beginning of this essay: this is being done by people and by things and by a combi…
A friend who works in digital video described to me what it would take to make something like this: a small studio of people (half a dozen, maybe more) making high volumes of low quality content to reap ad revenue by tripping certain requirements of the system (length in particular seems to be a factor). According to my friend, online kids’ content is one of the few alternative ways of making money from 3D animation because the aesthetic standards are lower and independent production can profit through scale. It uses existing and easily available content (such as character models and motion-capture libraries) and it can be repeated and revised endlessly and mostly meaninglessly because the algorithms don’t discriminate — and neither do the kids.
…r, because the people whose job it is to tell you what’s going on are proven liars and manipulators. You’re more likely to get close to the truth by stabbing for it in the darkness at random than you are by listening to people who have proven time and time again that their only job is to lie to you while selling your attention to advertisers. Your own intuition and information-gathering skills are infinitely more reliable instruments of truth finding, no matter how rusty they are.
My actual aim is to make satire that’s really really accessible. I think Colbert, Last Week Tonight, etc do that really well, and I wish there was more, and not solely political stuff. My aim is to begin to make satire for video. So, sketches, monologues, parody forms. That’s really where I want to be. I see writing and pitching to McSweeney’s et. al. as my practice ground where I’ll sharpen my skills. My aim is to write one piece a week, then transition to doing 1 video a week and build a YouTube base of video satire fans.
…ept there are all these fucking Democrats who are still trying to blame people for President Trump. You can’t keep acting like Clinton losing was some awful, horrible tragedy that could have been avoided if not for Bernie Sanders, Bernie-or-Busters, Jill Stein voters, Russia, WikiLeaks, etc., and then expect people not to push back on that. Saying that people were wrong to allow Clinton to lose is saying they should have helped her to win, which is saying that Clinton should be president right now. As long as you’re saying Clinton should be president you’re naturally going to have a large group of people saying “Uhh, no she shouldn’t.”
