In 1987, my husband and I went to Paris for the first time. It was during the time when Americans were at odds with Libya and Khadafi. Everyone said we were crazy to go. We stayed at a small hotel that was behind the American Embassy. One night, coming back from dinner, we were waved off the street by American armed soldiers from the embassy. The next day we read about an attempt on the American embassy. It didn’t change our attitudes about travel, and years later, we went to Istanbul, taking our son. It was early in Erdrogan’s tenure as president, well before the current crackdowns. We still travel frequently. When my cousin Dee and I went to visit my cousin who lives in Seville, Spain, Dee’s mother in law would call to ask if we had survived ISIS fighting. I know so many who miss out because of fear. Best of luck with your Bali event!
