Poor people are ENDLESSLY resourceful. Do you know how resourceful you have to be to pay the rent, the utilities, the insurance, and still put food on the table when working a low wage job? The one that you had to take because you started in poverty? You wanted to go to school, but you couldn’t QUITE get there. School is expensive you know. You’ve been scraping and saving, but there’s always something. Hard to buy quality when you’re wondering how to feed yourself and your family. Oh, and the kids aren’t always yours you know, so why don’t you dismiss THAT stereotype (yeah, that one is immediate). When you grow up in poverty, you often take care of siblings, cousins, other family members.

So sure, after you figure out how to pay for all of it, why don’t you spend some time reading just to better yourself? Because you’ve got lots of extra time. Read to those kids, too, ok? You need to be an involved parent, even though it’s just you and you’re doing your best. And the system is just stacked against you. Lord knows you’re JUST NOT trying hard enough.

Anyone who thinks that America has ANY interest in doing anything but punishing those who start in poverty is deluded. Meanwhile, it’s done its level best to set the poor people against each other so they each have someone to blame. Everyone but the richest is getting poorer. But, the rich have a great mindset. Nice.
