It appears to me that technology, like age, brings out the true essence of a human being. If a person tends to be greedy, bigoted, sybaritic, acquisitive, or cruel, technology enhances his or her ability to indulge those traits. So, too, if a person tends to be generous, altruistic, creative, inventive, or entrepreneurial. Unfortunately, more people seem to be tribal, angry, and belligerent these days than otherwise. Mass media, social media, and other technologies magnify these traits in an endless and destructive loop. Perhaps we all need a “time out” from “progress” so that we can focus on self-examination and self-improvement.
