Enough Tribalism

Sadly, I think that tribalism is just a deeply rooted piece of human psychology. Whenever a resource is perceived as limited, we want to be damned sure that “we” have it and “they” don’t. Whenever we think we are playing a zero-sum game, we want to be sure that “we” win, because, if someone is going to be a loser, it better be “them.” Partisan politics plays to this tendency in varying degrees. You may try to minimize the parties’ appeal to tribalism, but you will never eliminate tribalism’s role in political discourse and voter choice. This is especially the case now, because this campaign has seen the legitimization of the ugly underbelly of tribalism in America. It’s not going to go away any time soon. But I share your desire to see the last of it.
