I’m big on satire. Satire is an effective tool in reaching wider audiences, in informing people of serious social problems in a light-hearted tone. I still remember a video that of a ‘Muslim terrorist’ dropping a backpack near groups of people wherever he saw them and it made me laugh (but it also made me think seriously about stereotypes of Muslims and how ridiculous they are); a girl told me that that video was insensitive to the fact that many Syrians are being killed and that Muslims are so horribly misunderstood and that the video was in bad taste. I argued that it was satirical and that academic articles and lectures on the Muslim issue just aren’t sufficient ways to reach more people about how delicate the issue is and she still insisted that the video was in bad taste. A few weeks later, she laughed at a video that ‘mocked’ Hispanic and Asian immigrants. I thought that was strange. But, yes, I agree that humor is effective and is a good method that can be used to educate the masses.
