I’m a lily-white white and I didn’t like it, either. I agree with you completely. I also vigorously support Black Lives Matter, the ACLU, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Does that make me a secret African American? I’m also 60+ years-old, living in a small town in a Republican state. Has that shattered your own stereotype of white people yet? What I hope is that it does make me a compassionate, realistic, empathetic person. Let’s be realistic in one point, okay? Everyone sees the color of the other person’s skin, the slant of their eyes, the shape of their body, etc. unless we’re blind — literally. What our response to a person is will be based on our past experiences (including, especially, our education), our mental health, our temperament, and our upbringing. There are two of those we can change, one we can’t, and one that is hard to change, but can be done with a LOT of help. I’m working towards changing those areas which can be changed — both in myself and my family, and in others. How about you?
