The Kiera Plan — Right Now
Album Review
“I wanna be the last thing you think of before you go to sleep,” is not only a great way to open “Good Night,” but a great way to open the album. The Kiera Plan are from the Philly area and I remember the first time I saw them perform at the Troc Balcony. They’re energetic and entertaining performers. They released Right Now this year and you can definitely hear that energy right off the bat. “Good Night” was an excellent choice to open the album, even though that may seem like a better closing song. You instantly get a feel for the album and that momentum carries through.
“Time Flies” was the first song I heard off of the album since they released it as a single. It’s super catchy and relatable, which are always good things to have in a song. The title track has a great hook and easily draws you in. Then “What’s It Gonna Be?” slows it down a bit and gives off a laid-back vibe. If I keep going track-by-track, however, this review will start to get redundant with me saying how catchy and energetic the songs are. So I’ll keep this one fairly short. The album has a good mix of high-energy songs and mellow songs, such as “Annie.” This gives it excellent balance and isn’t constantly in-your-face like some pop-rock albums can be.
There’s clearly a ton of thought put into the lyrics and melody for this whole album. Sometimes you get strange phrasing or in some cases you can hardly understand the words, but neither is the case with this album. Shawn O’Brien wrote all but “You Are Not Alone” on this album (which was written by Chris Meservey), so he deserves a ton of credit on that end. Being able to write great hooks is not easy, but Shawn makes it seem that way. You can also clearly hear and differentiate between each instrument. The drums 9played by Daniel Pawlovich) aren’t over -bearing in anyway and compliment the melody well. ON the production end for Vince Ratti, he also did a nice job of making sure instruments didn’t run together and the overall production was done well.
For anyone into pop-rock music, I recommend this album. Even if you have never heard of The Kiera Plan, you just might find yourself singing along after just a listen or two. The album is solid and I really enjoyed it. Be sure to check these guys out on Facebook, too.
