The Murder of Michael Brown
On August 9th, 2014, Officer Darren Wilson of the St. Louis County Police shot 17-year old Michael Brown 6 times, killing him. Michael Brown’s body was left on the street for 4 and a half hours, before finally being removed and taken to the coroner’s office. This murder was racially fuelled. Mike Brown was a black teenager, and Darren Wilson is a white, racist police officer, drunk on the power of carrying a badge and a gun. On Monday night, the verdict was finally revealed on whether or not Darren Wilson would be indicted, meaning a trial would begin in the State court and he would be charged.
Darren Wilson was not indicted.
If you’re not already angry, I’m going to display some facts, and dispel some lies, that will make you angry. This is a monumental decision, and if you have a conscience, you will be on the right side of history.
Firstly, Michael Brown was unarmed and his arms were raised in the air at the time of his murder. He was surrendering; and yet, Darren Wilson still shot and killed him. Darren Wilson claims Michael Brown was reaching into his car, attempting to fight him, hence why Darren Wilson shot him. This is false. Michael Brown was shot from 148 feet away. Even if Michael Brown began charging and Darren Wilson shot him, he would not have been able to run half a football field (an American football field is 300 feet long), he would have been dead before he even reached the car.
Another common lie being told in the media is that Michael Brown robbed a convenience store, stealing a pack of cigarillos and Darren Wilson was responding to the call the store owner made. All of this is also false. Firstly, Darren Wilson did not know about the supposed robbery. Wilson was responding to a call about a sick baby prior to confronting Michael Brown (source.) While there is a surveillance footage of Michael Brown allegedly robbing a convenience store, Darren Wilson did not know about the incident, thus making his confrontation with Michael Brown unrelated.
There are also multiple eyewitnesses— All of whom did not know each other prior to the event— who all have matching statements. The main statement is that Michael Brown surrendered with arms raised in the air. An average cop who was trained properly would then take this moment to arrest him and take him into custody— Or even tasered him had he shown force and resistance, but not Darren Wilson. Darren Wilson doesn’t carry a taser because it makes him “uncomfortable.” And because Darren Wilson didn’t carry a taser, he felt shooting Michael Brown in cold blood would suffice. Another statement documents Michael Brown’s last words: “I don’t have a gun, stop shooting.”
Darren Wilson did not stop shooting.
Michael Brown is now dead, has been for over 100 days, and only now has a grand jury decided not to indict Darren Wilson, therefore not granting him a trial. The decision is so disrespectful; they can’t even grant Michael Brown and his parents a trial to get to the bottom of everything. The State court of Missouri is refusing to release how the members of the jury voted, however, we do know that they were composed of 9 white members, and only 3 black members. “Coincidentally”, it only takes 9 people to pass a vote in a grand jury.
Clearly, I’m stating this was a racially-charged murder, with a racially charged decision. How could it not be? When a white person decides to shoot up a school or a movie theatre, like James Holmes did in 2012, they are apprehended and the public decides they need “mental help”, but whenever a black person is accused of a small crime, like theft in the case of Michael Brown, they are shot at and killed.
Racism is alive and well in the United States, in Canada, and the rest of the world. It didn’t end with the abolition of slavery; how could it have when segregation and the Jim Crow laws were introduced in the early 1900s. Or the Apartheid in South Africa? It’s present when black people are racially profiled when shopping at higher end stores, it’s alive when someone with a turban is “randomly selected” when going through airport security, and it’s alive when white people can shop in a grocery store with a firearm strapped to their person and get to leave the store with their life, while a black man with a toy gun in Wal-Mart is shot dead.
The people of Ferguson are upset, and reasonably so. It’s time for the rest of us to get angry too.
