Dear Silicon Valley…
Dear Sili V,
Hope you don’t mind that I call you that. You’ve been a piece of me now for a few decades, and although we’ve had our ups and downs, I think you’d agree that we wouldn’t be who we are today without each other. I want you to know that I really appreciate you, and I’ve been more than happy to let you do your thing and take me on your wild journey.
You know I wouldn’t bother you if it wasn’t important. The reason I’m writing is to ask a huge favor: Can you try to help with climate change?
Listen, I know climate change isn’t your bag — there’s not enough money to be made for shareholders to show up on your radar. And you might not see the impact personally just yet. But here’s the thing — it’s affecting me now, in a big way.
Not sure if you’ve heard, but I’m in the craziest drought. Dude, it’s totes cray. There’s even a GIF about it! For whatever reason, no one is really freaking out yet, but shit is really going to hit the fan in the next few years.
I’ve been trying to work with Government on this, but unfortunately G is totally broken. (Which is really upsetting, but that’s another story. If you ask me, G needs meds & a therapist, stat.) That’s why I’m reaching out to you. You have this great track record of going around G to get stuff done. Everything you want, you somehow make happen! When public transit in SF wasn’t good enough for you, you created the tech bus, the black car taxi, and that ride share with the weirdly friendly people. Your accomplishments have been incredible: You’ve connected me to everyone I’ve ever met, mapped the entire world, helped topple regimes. And you’ve completely nailed the market for solving problems of people with smartphones who live in major cities. There are now so many ways to get food delivered, and even from the good restaurants!
I know I’m not smart enough to understand exactly how you work, but — seems like you have enough “innovation” and “disruption” to go around, so perhaps you can use a small part of it to help me. To be perfectly honest, I’m scared, and I’m running out of options. Your “out-of-the-box thinking” could be just what I need.
Ok, hope all is well otherwise. Was neat to see you in that HBO show — did you know they were making that??
