Is it a bad sign if a prospective employer doesn’t contact your references?

It could well be a good sign.

It means they are confident enough in your ability that they don’t contact them at all.

Don’t read too much into it there are many different reasons for why they might not contact them:

• Big organisation so don’t always contact references
• They think you’re good so don’t feel the need
• They are not hiring you so won’t contact them

There is nothing you can do about the last bullet point — and it’s not in your hands by this time anyway — and you’ll know soon enough — so don’t worry about it :)
