Fear, Bravery and beyond!

Last couple of months, I have been thinking a lot about bravery and courage. Why we love these words so much and what do these lead to ? What does it really mean to be brave and courageous ?

I was reading a blog today and came across this beautiful definition of courage which made me reflect back and put together my thoughts! -

“Bravery is the quality of mind and spirit that enables a person to face difficulty!”

Martin Luther King, Jr said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

“Bravery is the choice we make and following through that choice with all determination!”

If you have attended art of living, one of the principles you learn there is complementary values co exist.

To understand bravery, it’s more important to understand fear . More important is to understand what they lead to and basis that the choice you make between the two.

FEAR is a cruel one, but important for us to understand and accept — fear of unknown, fear of not being accepted and fear of loss and more importantly fear of failure .

Fear of negotiation at work place is one of the reasons why we fail to get the role we want, hike we want and sometimes career we want.

Fear is what stops us from taking risks, being in our comfortable shells. Fear is something which holds us back from happiness and finding our true potential!

Fear is the reason for mediocrity, choosing the middle path. Fear further creates fear.

We can’t escape fear and hence bravery becomes more important and utmost necessity of life.

Bravery leads us to risk- there is always 50% chance of defeat, but there is also 50% chance of greatness!

Bravery requires persistence and perseverance. That is what keeps us going when we can’t endure a boring lecture just after lunch, yet we make through it. Bravery requires endurance and courage, because first we make a choice to do something , but we also show the courage to endure the outcomes whatever may be.

When I think of people in my life who have been brave, i realize it has different meaning to everyone.

Sometimes bravery means to be the person in the crowd who speaks up, it also means to sit in silence and be okay. Sometimes it means standing up to a bully but it also means restraining from punching in someone’s face. Sometimes it means being critic of someone’s act and decisions, but it also means standing by those unpopular and tough decisions for you believe in.

Bravery is calling out everyday issues, at home at work place , but it also means taking the step to address them and make our environment a better place for future.Bravery is shooting for the unknown and dreaming to bring the BIG IDEA to life, bravery is also doing the same thing over and over again tirelessly and with same precision.

Whatever bravery is, it helps us find the unknown factor and hidden potential which we otherwise would not explore. Birds are pushed out of their nests and forced to fall. That’s how they learn to fly and it requires lot of bravery at their end! Bravery at the end takes you to knowing

We love the phrase- “ Brave soldiers, Brave leaders, Brave person, Brave idea, ”, but truth is anyone and everyone can be brave . It’s a mental choice and it’s the state of mind you want to be!

Be brave , be bold!
