This response will no doubt be buried somewhere among the gazillion other responses but I cannot help myself.

I think this whole approach is WRONG.

So far the ‘paid’ content I see comes mainly from the Big Boys of traditional publishing (The Economist, New York Times, Bloomberg, inter aliter); content I can get elsewhere (sometimes for free).

If we want the consumer to pay, then we must allow them some choice in what they pay for and it should, generally, not be content they can get elsewhere.

I don’t get the clap thing. If I read an article which I enjoy or feel is worthwhile, then I want to recommend and share that article to other people rather than pamper the ego of the author with claps. This is especially true where an author is already remunerated by one of the big boys I mentioned above.

When I was invited to become a member of Medium, I thought I was becoming a member. Instead, I seem to be considered a ‘consumer’; someone whose only value is in their money.

I would love to see Medium develop into a platform where people can express their thoughts, concerns and experiences in articles. These articles can be of any variety of styles, not just a re-echoing of the traditional approach adopted by big publishers. These articles, too, can be shared among a community (members and a wider community) with options to comment, respond and share further.

Ah well, maybe that is not the road Medium sees for itself. Perhaps only time and experience will reveal that.
