Being a CPI Trainer for the past ten years has taken me to all sorts of places. I’ve trained teachers, nurses, security guards, even social workers. You name a profession that deals with potentially volatile situations, and I’ve probably taught them some CPI techniques. But the most impactful training I ever conducted wasn’t in a school or a hospital — it was right here in my own community.

It all started with a call from Sarah, a friend who runs the after-school program at the local rec center. Sarah’s a fantastic woman, full of energy and a genuine love for kids. But lately, she’d been having trouble with a young boy named Michael. Michael came from a rough home life, and it often spilled over into his behavior at the program. He’d get frustrated easily, act out in loud, disruptive ways, and sometimes even lash out physically.

Sarah was at her wit’s end. The other kids were scared, and Sarah herself felt overwhelmed. She knew Michael needed help, but she didn’t know how to handle the situation safely and effectively. That’s when she remembered me and my crisis prevention institute certification.

Now, I’ll be honest — training a whole after-school program wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I became a CPI Trainer. But when Sarah explained the situation, I knew I had to help.

The first thing I did was tailor the training to their specific needs. We focused on de-escalation techniques — how to identify the warning signs of an impending meltdown, how to use calm communication to diffuse tension, and how to create a safe space for Michael to express his emotions. We also practiced physical intervention techniques as a last resort, but the emphasis was always on building rapport and preventing things from escalating in the first place.

The training wasn’t easy. It challenged some of the staff’s preconceived notions about how to handle disruptive behavior. But Sarah, bless her heart, was a champion. She encouraged open discussion, asked insightful questions, and really took the training to heart.

The difference after the training was night and day. The staff felt more confident and equipped to handle Michael’s outbursts. They started implementing the de-escalation techniques we practiced, and it made a world of difference.

One afternoon, Michael got upset over a simple game of checkers. In the past, this would have spiraled into a full-blown meltdown. But this time, Sarah noticed the warning signs — clenched fists, furrowed brow, muttering under his breath. Instead of reacting with frustration, she used the techniques we learned. She spoke to Michael in a calm, reassuring voice, acknowledged his feelings, and offered him some space to cool down.

It wasn’t a miracle cure. Michael still had bad days. But the frequency and intensity of his outbursts decreased dramatically. The other kids felt safer, and Michael himself seemed less on edge. He even started participating more in activities and forming friendships with the other kids.

Seeing the positive impact on these kids, on Sarah, and on the entire program was incredibly rewarding. It solidified for me why CPI certification is more than just a piece of paper or a training program. It’s about equipping people with the skills and knowledge to navigate difficult situations safely and compassionately.

Now, whenever I train a new group, I share this story. It’s a reminder that CPI techniques aren’t just for high-risk environments; they can be applied anywhere, even in our own communities, to create a safer and more positive space for everyone. Sometimes, all it takes is a little understanding and a few simple tools to make a big difference.
