Title: READ THIS BEFORE PURCHASING, Updated Review: Mistake Found
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2019
Review: UPDATE: Mistake found â the âStudentâ card is incorrect (both the description and the images), the images on the student card depicts the sign for expensive. Please see the photos Iâve added to this review.
Iâve gone through this set and thoroughly evaluated its content and hereâs what you need to know:
1. The cards are thin and flimsy. Iâm learning sign language to better communicate with my special needs daughter (age 4) I had to laminate every card before allowing her to handle them. (FYI: after lamination the cards no longer fit in the box they came in⊠but itâs a nice box so I up-cycled it to store my playing card decks)
2. Theyâre sorted alphabetically which actually drove me nuts. Personally, I think they shouldâve been sorted by subject (I.e. emotions, people, colors, animals, weather, etc.) I reorganized them which took some time but was very helpful when it came to studying.
3. CONTENT
3a. The inclusion and exclusion of some words was peculiar. The words âmagicâ and âphysicsâ are included but those words seemed very out of place. Physics wouldâve made more sense if other school subjects were included but theyâre not. In addition, there were words like summer which would make you think the other seasons (winter, fall, and spring) are included but theyâre not.
3b. I thought some of the cards shouldâve had more information. For example, I looked up the other seasons in my ASL dictionary and found that some of the signs are similar⊠it wouldâve been very helpful to have that noted on the card. Ex: the âcoldâ sign can also mean winter and you can use either the âSâ or âWâ hands. Furthermore, the sign for âgrowâ (included in the set) can also be used to say Spring but thereâs no note or indication of this on the card itself. The sign for âwishâ is included and is the exact same sign for hungry but again the card doesnât mention this. Luckily I already knew the sign for hungry (card not included) so that was my red flag to investigate other cards.
4. CLARITY
4a. Some of the illustrations & descriptions couldâve been more clear. For example: âfullâ and âenoughâ Iâll include pictures of these cards with the ASL dictionary definitions so you can compare them to see exactly what I mean; the ASL dictionary has a much better description than the cards do and this is consistent (ie. the dictionary description is equal to or more often, better than the flash cardâs definition.
4b. Side note: the âfullâ card isnât referring to full as in when youâve had plenty to eat, we know this because the card provided a synonym at the bottom: âsynonym fillâ and listed related words: â159. Crowded, 205. Enoughâ the numbers here indicate that wordâs place in the set (as I mentioned, I reorganized my set by subject so the numbers didnât help me but if you like the way the related words are listed on the cards and you want to utilize it for referencing then donât reorganize your set). ***Refer to the photos Iâve uploaded
5. Here are some other words in the set: ***Farm, School, Jail, College, Basement, Room, Home, Camp, City, Earth, California, Country, Africa, America, Canada / ***Number, Add to, Divide (math), Cheap, Cost, Cent, How many, Many, Money, Profit, Rich, Buy, Expensive, Broke (no money), Earn, Owe / ***Color, Black, White, Orange, Green, Blue, Pink, Red, Yellow, Purple, Brown / ***Temperature, Cold, Hot, Warm, Cool, Snow, Thunder, Lightning, Rain / ***Vacation, Travel, Visit, Depart, Escape, Attend, Arrive, Come, Chase, Kick, Jump, Fall down, Dance, Stand, Sit, Play(fun), Stop(cease), Go, Balance, Follow (trail), Catch up, Get in, Get on, Wait, Stay, Hurry, Walk, Close, Applaud, Build, Create, Make(produce), Look for, Borrow, Drop, Destroy, Break(damage), Fix, Improve, Wash / ***Ahead, Approximately, Almost, Before, After, Start, End, Middle, Last, Above, In, Here, Area / ***Today, Yesterday, Tomorrow, Morning, Afternoon, Night, Year, Month, Week, Day, Hour, Minute, Early, Later, Past, Soon, Recently, Now, Not yet / ***I, My, You, Your, His/her, He/she, Person, People, Boy, Girl, Man, Woman, Husband, Wife, Mother, Father, Baby, Children, Daughter, Son, Aunt, Sweetheart, Audience, Doctor, Police, Assistant, Student, Boss / ***Cat, Dog, Tiger, Giraffe, Elephant, Turtle, Alligator, Bear, Cow, Mouse, Squirrel, Rabbit, Fish, Butterfly, Bug(insect), Spider / ***Clothes, Shoes, Bracelet, Medicine, Key, Candle, Book, Paper, Picture, Bell, Alarm, Ticket, Movie, Music, Stairs, Chair, Bed, Electricity, Computer, Machine, Microwave oven, Car, Parking, Airplane, Boat, Train, Bicycle, Baseball, Bowling / ***Live, Born, Dead, Grow, Summer, Flower, Tree, Wood, Fire (flame), Moon, Dark, Sunrise, Sunset / ***Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Thirsty, Eat, Drink, Popcorn, Onion, Potato, Egg, Cheese, Chicken, Bread, Pizza, Apple, Chocolate, Cookie, Candy, Milk, Soda, Water, Tea, Coffee, Sweet, Delicious, Cook, Bake, Kitchen, Knife / ***Who, What, When, Where, Why, How, Ask, Answer, Whatâs up / ***Darn, Boast, Scold, Resent, Mock (ridicule), Punish, Tease, Insult, Deceive, Quarrel, Bother, Conflict, Complain, Ignore, Refuse, Resist / ***Big, Small, Fast, Slow, Dirty, Clean, Old, Young, Pretty, Cute, Dark, Comfortable, Long, New / ***See, Heat, Listen, Smell, Dead, Sign / ***Polite, Please, Thank you, Excuse me, Sorry, Hello / ***Always, Never, Agree, Disagree, Easy, Difficult, Canât, Can, Similar, Different, Same, Opposite, Lose(misplace), Find, With, Without, Appear(show up), Disappear, Right(correct), Wrong, Dangerous, Careful, (Be) Careful, Careless, No, Yes, Good, Bad / ***..ADDING MORE, CHECK BACK LATER FOR UPDATE
6.Despite some serious flaws I still recommend these cards as a study method. The setâs shortcomings actually encouraged me to learn more and I gained a lot of insight simply by exploring the words in conjunction with my ASL dictionary (Iâve also reviewed the dictionary if youâre interested). I chose to write additional information on the cards and to facilitate quick referencing I wrote the dictionary page number on the card. I learn really well with flash cards and if you do too I think youâll benefit from this set.

Title: At first glance an ok deck, time will tellâŠâŠâŠ.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2015
Review: I want to start by saying I am in no way an ASL expert or even a experienced signer at that. I am just giving a short review on the cards themselves just to get you off to a good start. I will review them in more detail later. I just want everyone to know, that like others have said these cards canât possibly have all the most used words in the english language but they do give you 500 words. I was somewhat disappointed to learn that some words that we do use were not under there respected letter, ex: quit, argue, leave, friend etc. I was surprised because I watch the great tv show Switched at Birth on ABC and they have several people who are deaf and sign on the show and I learned words on the show that arenât even in this deck like the above mentioned words. Each card has from one to three images on it to show how to sign the word with arrows directing the movements of your hands. And on the back is the word they are signing and the synonym if there is one. Also there are instructions on how to sign the word if the picture wasnât easy to understand. There is also a column of ârelatedâ words and the reference number of where to find the word in the deck since the cards are numbered. Also pay close attention to the signerâs facial expressions, since in ASL facial expressions are a must with some words. The cards measure 4.5 inches by 3.25 and they have a very thin feel just like a deck of playing cards. I do feel they could have used a little more coating for protection but overall they are a good quality. They do bend very easily so I advise people to be careful when using them. I am thinking of investing the money into getting them laminated to make them more durable. The metal ring that it comes with is only 1 and 1/2 inches in diameter so It can only hold approximately 25 cards at a time comfortably without losing mobility. So if you wanted to have a lot of cards on the ring at a time it wonât happen. Now the cards are alphabetized, color coded and numbered so that makes it easy for organization, however they are not easy to get out of the box they come in. So unless you put pull tabs on each card or dump them upside down to get them out, they are snug. I was looking for a folder with clear plastic sheets to put them in so I could see the front and back with ease, however with 500 cards that would get costly. So I opted for the 2 inch diameter rings sold here on Amazon (ACCO Loose Leaf Binder Rings, 2 Inch Capacity, Silver, 50/Box (72205) on sale right now 65% off at $7.99 for 50 of them. I received them today and they were perfect. I only used 23 of them because two of the letters U an (V) were put together because they only had two words each. I did put them on the rings based on letter. So each ring has one whole letter group from the alphabet. Then I used the GIANT snap clips from harbor freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/3-inch-snap-clip-fastener-47658.html) to attach several of the rings together. That is just the idea I had, but Iâm sure there are people out there who would come up with a better, easier solution for using these cards more effectively. I already had the giant snap clips so that was more cost effective for me.
As for the actual words that they offer it would take awhile to give you each word individually so I will forgo doing that but I will say, you may look up a word that you need and it may not be there, like the word âquitâ. I figured with âqâ being a letter with only a few used words they would put in as many of them as they could but they only put in quiet and quarrel, and frankly who uses quarrel anyways. I feel they could have at least added the words queen, quiz, etc. I mean there arenât that many âqâ words anyways so what would a few more have really cost them. âQuickâ is not in the deck under the letter âQâ but it is under the synonym for fast. So an example of a word they could have kept out and replaced with a more common word is âsquirrelâ. They have that word in the deck but I canât remember the last time I have used that word, let alone on a regular basis. So that is just one example of a word that was added that could have been replaced with a more common word. No offense to squirrel lovers. ;)
So in conclusion, this deck is good to have on hand, but dont get to frustrated if it doesnât have everything you are looking for. Itâs great for a quick reference on most words without having to log on to your computer or go find your ASL book but as with all things in life, it isnât perfect. I do plan on re-reviewing this product at a later date with more details about the specific words in the deck, like how many there are that are used more often than others and which common words that are missing are actually under other words as a synonym. So bare with me while I get a handle on going through this deck. After all, there are 500 words and I just wanted to give you a first impression review of this deck. Hope this helps make your decision a little easier. If you have any questions just send a post and I will do my best to get back to you swiftly. Thanks for your time and happy signing.
P.S. the original box they come in, is a nice sturdy box with a flip top lid, fit perfectly to the amount of cards with no room to spare. And that box is wrapped with a clear plastic wrap to protect the box in shipping, which is then placed in your typical fed ex or ups box depending how it is shipped to you. So the packaging gets five stars.
