“Love & Mercy” - Brian Wilson and the Myth of Creative Genius
Paul Cantor

I saw Love & Mercy this past weekend and really enjoyed it, especially Dano’s performance as the young Wilson. I’ve been listening to and humming songs from Pet Sounds ever since. A few hours after leaving the theater, though, it dawned on me that with the exception of the Latina housekeeper, there wasn’t a single person of color in the entire movie. I found myself wondering whether Brian Wilson and the other Beach Boys really led such a sheltered existence. How could a movie where Rock & Roll was a central theme be so white? Or was that just the way it was in Brian Wilson’s world?
