Early Dutch computer pioneers: Willem van der Poel and Gerrit van der Mey

Yesterday, we had the privilege to hold a seminar, celebrating Willem van der Poel’s 90th birthday. Van der Poel designed early Dutch computers such as the ZEBRA and TESTUDO. Willem van der Poel stressed out once again, the pivotal role of Gerrit van der Mey with whom he closely worked with. And what a special man he was. Van der Mey became blind at the age of 4 due to meningitis. That did not stop him from graduating cum laude in Mathematics during World War II. Unfortunately, Van der Mey was faced with meningitus once again in 1945. He became deaf. He came to work for the Dutch PTT where he met Willem van der Poel. Read both their stories here:
