These types of responses, those that suggest that we should see through one’s racial identity, is to suggest that my racial identity does not matter, and that you would rather not take the time to understand how it shapes the ways in which I see/experinence the world and more importantly, how the world sees and experiences me. Color blind racial ideologies, as idealistic as they may be, are as oppressive as overt racist behavior. You don’t get to ‘classify’ people for 300 hundred years, tell them how and why these baseless classifications matter, and build whole societies around these classifications and get upset when those classified decide they want to reshape the narrative about the classification they were given. You too can have a seat, just not on the bleachers with the other social justice allies.
We have to stop treating and classifying people by their skin color or facial features and start looking at each person as just that. A person. Not black, or white, or Hispanic, or Indian. A living, breathing human with feelings and experiences entirely separate from the rest of their “race”. That’s true equality, and saying that enjoying a Beyonce album is dependent
