THE REVENGE OF KURAPIKA
In the vast world made by Yoshihiro Togashi, one of my favorite characters is surely Kurapika. Since the beginning of the narration the author shows us this character and he is presented as an introvert guy, able in fighting and very intelligent. Like Kishimoto with Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto, Togashi evidences the real Kurapika’s nature of revenger, as the character himself says.
Kurapika wants to avenge the death of his loved ones and friends, killed by the members of Genei Ryodan, some criminals who are willing to murder the innocent ones in order to obtain what they desire. Kurta, the name of Kurapika’s clan, was famous for its red crimson eyes.
During the first arc there is only one moment where the author shows us the hatred of Kurapika for these criminals, who can be recognizable through a spider tattoo. Indeed, in the Trick Tower the boy fights against a prisoner who has a spider tattoo on his back and declares to belong to Genei Ryodan. Until that moment, we have never seen Kurapika so red with anger, so we realize that revenge is anything but a vague goal, but it is a reason for living.
What I have always loved of Togashi’s narration is the way he changes the main focus among the different characters. During the first arcs Kurapika is one of the main characters, while he becomes the protagonist in Yorshin City arc. The young revenger gets the work as a bodyguard of a mafia boss in order to enter the most important auction in the world, where Spider should participate, as Hisoka said.
The whole Yorkshin City arc is a whirlwind of emotions for Kurapika and for readers and watchers. We will see the young kurta completely lose control after his meeting with the members of Genei Ryodan, we will understand the true essence of his pain and what he is willing to lose in order to avenge his family. His fight against Uvogin is one of the best in the story, even if it is not my favorite.
When we discover the power of his chains and what he is ready to sacrifice, we realize the importance of his mission. Linking your heart to one of your chains to gain a power able to defeat Spider is as crazy as it’s so admirable.
Revenge makes you blind and once obtained you are completely empty. In fact, when Kurapika believe his enemies died, he begins to have some health problems but later he feels well again because of finding out the deceit. After capturing the chief Chrollo and losing him with the exchange of Gon and Killua, the boy falls again due to a severe fever.
The body and the mind of Kurapika just live for revenge.
