Backstory and Motivation
Our core team members got into cryptocurrency trading a little over a year ago, back when things were very different. Binance was unheard of, the topic of the day was the upcoming Bitcoin fork, and the trendiest way to make money was to spend thousands of dollars on gas to dip into first come first served ICOs. It was around that time that we stumbled across a seemingly unimpressive decentralized exchange called EtherDelta.
Although slow, expensive, and ridden with terrible design, there was something quite magical about EtherDelta. Part of the magic was the ability to directly connect a Ledger to start trading. Another part of it was the ability to find/create a market for essentially ANY token. As exchanges started charging exuberant fees for token listings, and certain sovereign nations started cracking down on ICO projects, EtherDelta remained a safe haven. A place where both daring projects and terrible shitcoins can get listed. The important thing was that nobody had absolute power to judge.
The author even invested in the EDT ICO (oops). The ordeal taught many of us a valuable lesson: the decentralization of exchange technology and the decentralization of exchange governance are two completely different concepts.
Moving forward to today, technologies such as 0x drastically lower the cost of building a decentralized relayer. The cost is so low that a project team does not need to take on the burden of venture capital or ICO, thus keeping the freedom to bootstrap a truly decentralized exchange.
