If we have ever shopped for the diamonds, we will surely have noticed just how many more round brilliant diamond there are than any other shape. There are a number of reasons as to why this is, and, as with every shape, the round diamond has specific unique characteristics that potential buyers should be aware of before making a purchase of a diamond.

Cushion-shaped diamonds:

There is a number of common diamond shapes apart from the traditional round brilliant cut, and cushion cut diamond is one of these. This has been around longer than most shapes. But it is still subject to the same grading criteria as all other shapes. At the same time, the unique features of it mean that there are specific things we will need to take into consideration when we are buying one.

What are cushion diamonds?

The cushion has actually been around for nearly three hundred years. Making it one of the oldest diamond shapes still in everyday use. The name cushion refers to the rounded, cushion-like shape that these diamonds have. Cushion diamonds feature rounded corners and very large facets, which accentuate the natural brilliance and clarity of the diamond.

The Oval Shape:

The cutting process involved in making the oval shape is very unique to the particular stone. The shape was first designed by the legendary diamond cutter, Lazare Kaplan. He was able to cleave many irregular shaped diamonds into some of the most unique designs of the generation.

Radiant Cut Diamond:

If we compare to the other diamond cuts, the radiant had a relatively recent emergence. The radiant is a mixed cut which means that it has elements of both a step cut and round cut. The radiant has rounded and comparatively short facets, making it closer to around in this regard.
