Another brain imaging “discovery” is released to the gullible public. Despite the voluminous literature demonstrating the fundamental flaws in this line of research it continues to make headlines. The weaknesses and methodological errors that continually plague studies that purport to demonstrate the association of particular cognitive states with particular states of the brain as revealed by brain imaging techniques have been shown over and over to be fundamentally in error. Yet, these works still dominate discussions in neuroscience. It has been almost twenty years since Bennett and Hacker laid bear the logical fallacy at the heart of studies like these. More recently Shulman has further developed their ideas and even more conclusively shown why they are fundamentally nonsense.
