Or: what to say to your grandpa when he acts up over turkey
You’re already going to be fighting with your parents about politics over the holidays — don’t forget to include the courts!
“Christine Blasey Ford just wanted attention. I feel badly for what Brett Kavanaugh went through.”
Christine Blasey Ford has received death threats and has not been able to return to her home or to work since testifying — not exactly every girl’s dream.
Kavanaugh has been celebrated at no less than three fancy ceremonies welcoming him to the Supreme Court. Not only that, he got a standing ovation at a fancy DC dinner party thrown by conservative lawyers and judges. Brett Kavanaugh his fine, and he’s set for life.
When your auntie clutches her pearls and says “Politics are so nasty these days — all those women yelling at senators — so unladylike!”
These are not normal times. Trump started it. Remember when he put toddlers in cages?
Brett Kavanaugh himself sneered, yelled, and disrespected senators when he was testifying. He took a page straight out of Trump’s playbook during his hearing.
A senator’s job is to hear from the public. If an elected official can’t take getting confronted by survivors, then they’re in the wrong line of work.
Of course women are yelling at Senators! 1 in 6 women in America has been the victim of a sexual assault. Millions of women were upset when Blasey Ford testified, because we identify so strongly with what she went through. We’re all sick of being preyed upon by entitled men! You should be happy ALL we’re doing is yelling!
When dad says: “Poor Brett Kavanaugh. They really railroaded him. What about due process??”
The number of men who commit sexual assault and get away with it is FAR GREATER than the number of women who make false reports.
Brett Kavanaugh got all the process due to him: he was able to respond under oath to Blasey Ford’s testimony. He was belligerent and yelled at senators about beer for most of it. If you ask me, he doesn’t have the temperament to be on the Court.
It was a job interview, not a trial. If he had not been confirmed, he still would have had a cushy, lifetime seat on the federal bench.
When mom says: “I don’t want to live a world where anybody can say anything about somebody and ruin their lives” / “I’m worried about my son! What if someone accused your brother of sexual assault?!”
Sexual assault survivors deserve to be heard. And men who commit atrocious acts of sexual violence should be held accountable, even if they’re “nice guys” with good careers.
Every allegation of sexual assault should be thoroughly investigated, and especially for a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court, I want the FBI to do its job — even if my brother is the nominee!
“I believe that Christine Blasey Ford was attacked, but she must have confused Brett Kavanaugh with someone else.”
Experts say that someone who was traumatized decades ago would remember big details about the incident but not others — for example, how they got to or from a party, or what day of the week it was, etc.
Christine Blasey Ford told her husband and her therapist about the attack and named Kavanaugh as her attacker years before he was nominated. This was not a decades-long con job on her part.
