During a fundraising process requesting intros to investors is a critical part to getting in front of your potential investors.

The process should resemble the following:

  1. Research an individual or firm that is a good investor fit for your company.
  2. If it’s a firm, find the right individual at the firm.
  3. Using LinkedIn and AngelList find a mutual connection to make the introduction.
  4. Send a short email to your mutual connection to gauge their level of comfort of making the introduction:

Hey Tim,

How are things with you?

We’re raising our next round and I’m researching potential investors. Startup Ventures seems like a great fit for us given their great interest in food and no investments in any of our direct competitors. It looks like you’re connected on LinkedIn to Joe.

Do you know him well? If I send you a blurb, would you be willing to forward it along to him and see if he’s interested in chatting?

5. After your mutual connections opts-in, thank them and request what they say when they forward the email:

Thanks Tim! I’ll send you a new email next. When you forward the email, feel free to mention the event we catered for you last year and the feedback you received from your guests. Thanks again!

6. Start a brand new thread that they can easily forward for the opt-in.

Subject: Bento — Request for intro to Joe

Tim,

Are you able to introduce me to Joe at Startup? Their experience with Philz, Pantry and consumer in general would be a huge asset for our team. I think we’re a perfect stage & fit for their thesis as we’re “re-imagining” restaurants. More on Bento below…

Thanks!
