The state of distributed ledger technology

First there was Bitcoin.

Then it became Blockchain. At some point it was Cryptocurrency. But none of these terms capture what the ecosystem has evolved to today.

It’s similar to how a smartphone is now less of a phone, and more of a pocket computer.

A term that does adequately describe the current ecosystem is Distributed Ledger Technology. It’s been floating around a bit, but I‘d like to see it used more in place of Blockchain and Cryptocurrency. I admit it’s tough since it doesn’t roll off the tongue. But with the rise of projects like IOTA and Raiblocks which use the novel Tangle and Block-Lattice architectures respectively, Distributed Ledger is the only term general enough to encompass them.

Who knows, maybe in a few years from now, not even Distributed Ledger will be good enough.
