[Old and New] the walk through time in Seoul — Deoksugung Palace
When roaming about a busy city like Seoul, we often don’t notice the passage of time this city has gone through… So let’s take a walk through time in Seoul.
If you are looking for something authentic to do in Seoul, walking in and around 덕수궁 Deoksugung Palace near 시청 the City Hall would be a good choice. Starting from 수문장 교대의식 changing the royal guards’ ceremony to being surrounded by little shops, vendors, and the city museum, Deoksugung Palace is one of my favorite places to walk around.
Especially at night, these 한양길라잡이 Hanyang-gillajabee, the tours of old Seoul also known as Hanyang during Joseon dynasty come to life. People walk around in groups with a tour guide telling the secret stories of how 고종황제Emperor Gojong enjoyed coffee back then called gabe and then was poisoned to death by Japanese officials who wanted to annex Korea. The turbulent times of the turn of the 20th century in Korea would capture your imagination and boom! You can travel back in time and get lost in history.
Inside the palace, the east and west co-exist as the buildings of the last Joseon dynasty struggled to modernize, and as you walk outside the stone walls, you are once again disoriented by the remains of the old and the entities of the present. In the age of high tech run society, this mixture of time and memories gives a fresh breath of air about life. After all, life will throw you into the constant source of changes and it is inevitable for you to move on. Someday when today becomes yesterday, there still remain stories and memories coliving with you.
