For as long as we can remember, we’ve been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Healthier eating habits reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity that make us look and feel older than we actually are. Abundant scientific research has shown how important food is to healthy aging. Not only does it boost your energy and memory levels, it also has an impact on your overall health as well as your outward physical appearance. These same studies have shown that by eating certain foods, you can assist your body in slowing down the aging process. Over the next couple weeks we will embark on a journey and share together some of the best foods you can start eating today to ensure healthier aging tomorrow.

Oatmeal — Research has shown for years the strong correlation between oatmeal and cholesterol reduction. Oatmeal is rich in soluble fiber that gets rid of the “bad” cholesterol while the oats themselves are packed with the antioxidants that battle against cell damage. The combination of those two key ingredients can assist in plumping skin and ultimately aid in reducing wrinkles.

Tomatoes — Tomatoes are so much more than a pretty salad topping. They’re packed with vitamin C, which helps build collagen and, in turn, makes your skin look firmer and plumper. They also have lycopene, which protects your skin from UV damage and improves your vascular system.

Blueberries — Blueberries pack a huge anti-aging health punch and can promote cell regeneration for new skin. Rich in polyphenols, research suggests that a blueberry-rich diet not only improves your motor skills, but also can help fight diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Low-Fat Yogurt — Rich in calcium, protein and vitamin D, plain, low-fat yogurt supports strong bones, muscle maintenance and contains probiotics. Probiotics are healthy microorganisms and bacteria that support healthy digestive function by helping to balance the micro-intestinal environment. The calcium and phosphorus that can boost tooth enamel, which will make your smile even brighter while also assisting in reduced skin wrinkling.

Green Tea — While not actually a food, many teas are high in anti-aging antioxidants, but green tea is rich in an antioxidant known as EGCG, which helps fight wrinkles and rejuvenate skin cells. Green tea also may protect against cancer, control blood sugar levels, and help reduce inflammation associated with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Over time, as we age and grow the biological truth is that the nutritional demands of our bodies increase making nutrient-dense foods more important for us and our bodies. Consuming these foods regularly or daily will boost the intake of the essentials like protein, calcium, vitamin D and omega-3-fats along with antioxidants which are used throughout the body. With a handful to choose from this week, try and incorporate some (or all) of these super foods into your diet and soon you will see and feel the difference. Join us again next week as we tackle part two of the Super Foods for Healthy Aging!
