A certain level of proficiency might be necessary for basically everyone. In the near future technology will pervade our society more than ever, essentially a new environment. Not being able to code could be a tremendous handicap.

I don’t think twice about mandatory education to read and do arithmetic. I don’t think basic coding should be left out of the curriculum either.
