Mike, I hope the comments here have illuminated you to the fact that many Americans are anti-science, although they deny it. Really, what I’ve noticed, is they’re pro engineering-that-directly-makes-my-life-easier, but do not like the scientific method a la carte.

You got at this point a little in your essay. You didn’t quite admit it, but Americans will only accept science when it personally benefits them AND does not directly contradict their existing beliefs.
