Something I’m having a hard time reconciling, and maybe you can shed some light on, is the trade off between inalienable rights to defense and life. When I hear someone say that they have a right to self defense, and that includes killing someone, then the right to life is not inalienable because we would agree that the person defending themself is more innocent. If the right to life is truly inalienable, and so is the right to self defense, then wouldn’t your right to defend yourself include ensuring that you did not kill someone, even if they were trying to kill you? If a right is truly inalienable, then even an individual would not be able to give it up and of course not have it rescinded by anyone or anything else. The Framers even went so far as to say that a divine Creator could not rescind these rights, so why then can an individual, in the act of attacking, forfeit their right to life?
