SCENE 9
EXT. EMPLOYEE BREAK AREA — COURTYARD — DAY
CANDICE (50’s) shares a patio table with COOPER (30’s). They are co-workers at a major biotech company, good friends and frequently eat lunch together. Today’s no exception.
COOPER: I really appreciated your time over the last few weeks. Your insight into your department’s inner workings has really been helpful during the long interview process. I don’t know how to thank you.
CANDICE: I think you’re the best person for the position and want you to shine. Really!
Cooper smiles, looks slightly embarrassed.
CANDICE (Continued): We need a strong director who won’t accept status quo and will be an advocate for our managers. With the company’s accelerated growth, it’s a crucial time for shoring up our department’s foundation.
COOPER: Margo by the way enjoyed the wine you brought over for dinner last week. She really enjoys your friendship too.
CANDICE: I’m saving a special merlot for promotion day. (Beat) But I’ll miss sharing a cube wall together…
COOPER (laughs): Me too. Won’t be the same working in an office by myself.
CANDICE: Think of it as a glass cube with windows! When is your final interview with Gary Carter?
COOPER: It was last yesterday.
CANDICE: So now you’re in a wait and see mode.
COOPER: I got the job.
CANDICE (playfully smacks his shoulder): Why didn’t you tell me sooner!
COOPER (reserved): You’re the first manager to know.
CANDICE: I’m so happy for you.
COOPER (stares down at his shoes): Unfortunately your employment here is terminated effective today.
