The problem, as I see it, is you cast a wide net and many people you didn’t name got caught up. I also see problems with this piece because it seems as if you are trying to fix the parameters in which it is “respectable” to operate within regarding payment. The subtext of the original post reeked with respectability posturing and mammy pandering. If you can’t see that, then I don’t know what to say to you about it. The melanin deficient aspect was troubling, tone-deaf, dismissive, and spiteful. It was not the first time you pulled that trick out the bag, and it speaks to a prejudice you harbor against people like me (light-skinned) and people not like me (recent mulattoes). It took 400 years of forced miscegenation for me to get this color “privilege”; and I stand with my African ancestors, not the European conquerors every day. There’s nothing false or contrived about my chosen allegiance to my people. What I hope will happen is that you will dig a lil deeper and find that place in you where Andrew Caldwell resides and ask: Who are me to judge?
