The Magic of Empty Space
Our society values good things. We like things that are well made, functional, good looking and preferably long lasting. We value such things so much that we have multibillion dollar industries dedicated to producing, marketing and selling these things.
Imagine if we, collectively as a society, come to value space as much as we valued things. Would this mindset change the world?
You might think that it is queer of me to discuss the value of space. After all, space is free. You purchase a house and it comes completely empty with all the space added to it – totally free of charge.
Your first impulse would be to fill the space with things; Good things, pretty things. Things that would make the house a home for you. The large expanse of space unnerves you. You think – No home should be so empty. It’s just not cosy. It’s not naturally.
Before you commence to fill your home with things, take a moment to enjoy the space of your new home. Enjoy the way light is reflected from the surface of your white ceramic floors. Enjoy how unobstructed your view is. Enjoy how heightened your other senses have become in the absence of things. You may begin to notice the dust particles floating in the air. Even they become a piece of art when there is an expanse of space. Notice the scent of the home – the fresh smell of paint combined with concrete. Feel the soft breeze blowing into the empty space through the open window. Notice how clear your mind has become. Appreciate that all of these are free. They are beautiful and completely without cost.

Now fill your home with things. Things that you love. Understand that with every item you add, some of the space that had greatly touched you a moment ago is being taken away from you. Now you will begin to understand that space really is not free of charge. It is a very valuable commodity that is bought only with precision of possession acquisition. Acquire only what you need. Nothing more. This way, you will be one of the privileged few in this world to enjoy the magic of empty space.
