Face the Fact — We Live in A Post Social Media Era

I am not the first one to mention that fact that we are living in a Post Social Media era. In fact, I am convinced as I write this that social media isn’t dead but it certainly can be spoken about in the terms of “the glory days” or “remember back when”.
Social media platforms mistaken my boredom for loyalty and this a major chink in the armor.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use them, on the contrary, I love Twitter but no matter how much polish you use, social media will never shine like it use to do. Social media is now a habit with auto-listing, auto posting, everything driven by automation. This and many others signs have lead me saying that we live in a post social media era.
I had hopes that Snapchat would lead me to the promise land, away from automation, cheap lists, asking for likes/hearts and into pure nirvana of authenticity. This is not true, it maybe a great tool(see my video on understanding snapchat) but it is not manageable and the push by Gary Vee as an investor to move his following onto Snapchat might be the straw that breaks Snapchats back.
What is happening?
The main issue for Snapchat is that as all these marketing people started to move to Snapchat they carry with them all the bad habits that were have created on Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin.
What bad habits?
- Following and following to gain an audience reach.
- Only broadcasting not engaging.
- Asking for hearts on ghost codes to more visible instead of creating awesome content.
- Now Shapchat autoplays snaps in order which means you can watch hours of snaps by letting snapchat just run.
- The authenticity and need to be engaged are no longer a foundation of Snapchat.
Please watch this video by Keenan Erwin that puts it into perspective.
Since, snapchat has finally been sucked into the “influence marketing” vortex it will lose all its uniqueness to a well trained pool of social media people that know how to rob any tool of its authenticity. This is not a jab at any one person but the reality of human nature, we automate, we chase numbers, we like top 50 lists, we want the best of everything with as little work as possible.
The bottom line is that the social media boring barometer has risen as it is always the same thing, the same people, the same broadcast, the same content across all platforms. The fact is people don’t crave boredom they crave authenticity and uniqueness. So no matter the tool that fits into “social media” be it a Meerkat, Blab, Twitter and Periscope,Snapchat, Facebook or Instragram once something better comes along the masses will move away.
Why? Because these social media platforms like facebook mistakens my boredom of facebook for loyalty and that is the chink in their armor.
