Thank you Heather, for this thoughtful articulation. It reminded me of John Seed’s observation that when he first went out to protect the rain forest he was himself trying to protect the forest, but that over time he began to understand he was the rain forest working to protect itself, and that when we understand this, interest in saving the rain forest becomes self-interest. When we finally understand we are Earth itself, then earth care and people care and fair share are the same thing- parity becomes as natural as the body making sure each cell receives nutrition, resources are naturally distributed throughout the body for the good of the entirety. To me, permaculture has lead to understanding that I am not directing a system, I am part of the system itself. This leads me to both a fuller wholeness and to the acceptance of impermanence of the parts- what is permanent is the whole, not me, and not the human species, but Gaia herself.
