One of my favorite books is Stern Men by Elizabeth Gilbert. Have you read it? About lobstering rather than fishing but the same sort of men.

Until his death at 75, my step-grandfather was a farmer north of Bangor. Other than when he was eating or sleeping, he had a pipe in his mouth, often unlit. Between that pipe and his extreme Down East accent, I couldn’t understand a word he said! He showed no emotion, ever. He farmed his land, worked for the road department clearing snow in the winter, fixed what was broken, and watched a little TV. He rarely saw people and was fine with that.

So many of the older generation of men in Maine — fisherman, lobersterman, and farmers — are like the ones you write — independent, stubborn, strong-willed, hard-working, and unwillingly to change.

I truly adore your stories and am happy to have discovered you.

Like what you read? Give Dennett a round of applause.

From a quick cheer to a standing ovation, clap to show how much you enjoyed this story.
