A behind-the-scenes look at March on the campaign trail with Hillary Clinton

Dear Hilary

Congratulations! Looks like you will prove to be more popular than Bernie. I sincerely hope you will prove to be more popular than that Donald too. There is just something about that man!

Now I struggle with all that political stuff. Your campaigning poetry leaves me cold and your governing prose — alongside your old pal Barak — seems stale, old and inadequate to the job that needs doing.

So I have a suggestion for you. A way to pep-up your popularity even more. A way to drag those republicans, no doubt kicking and screaming, into an authentic beauty contest.

My suggestion is that you set your sights on a new policy target. Make a promise, a campaign commitment, to lower the Gini coefficient of the USA to less than 0.42 (insert your best offer here).

A Gini coefficient of 0.42 is the current status of income distribution in America. It is according to the CUNY latest data calculations for 2013. It shows America to be the most UNequal of all first World economies.

Consider the pros and cons of setting such a policy target. Never mind balancing the budget or reducing the deficit or shaking hands with Cuba, or controlling inflation or obliterating IS. Remember it’s the economy stupid!

You want consumer led economic growth? Then give more money to the people who will spend it on the basics… All those lower earning voters.

You want a landslide majority vote for democracy? Promise more ‘trickle-down’ government spending than the republicans with an accountable target.

You want a fairer America? 50% of our national income is shared between 90% of the people — the majority of voters — . The other 50% is in the hands of the richest 10% — the minority. Who’s side are you on? How would you measure ‘fairness’? 55–45? 60–40?

Go on! I dare ya! Set the Gini free:
