We are Property providers- Don’t like the word ( Landlord ) sounds too arrogant and controlling to my way of thinking. Being in this business for nearly thirty years- I was saddened by hearing what some Portland providers were doing to their tenants. Any skilled provider knows that most tenants have a fragile financial threshold and its not only unethical and immoral to raise rents in drastic increases, its just not good business either. I am guessing that any of us regardless of our income would say we hate unexpected increases in our monthly expenses because we are not prepared to cover the costs a lot of the time. I apologize for ( Landlords ) that take advantage. I was raised to believe that INTEGRITY was when you had the chance to take advantage of a person or circumstance and refused to do so. I don’t know all the facts on these rumors I just presented, but I do know that no Property Providers I know run their business ethics that way. We have always enjoyed being able to establish a relationship with our tenants and meet their particular needs whether it be financial- or what ever. The problem as I see it however, is when government steps in between that private and delicate relationship. Now you have tenants vrs the Landlord. No one wins now. The property owner gets defensive of his own personal property that he or she purchased with their own sweat — tears and years of hard work- only to have a government power dictate what they can do with their own rentals. This is the part I struggle with. I am an adult here and I rely on the facts. Not just the same ol stuff I hear constantly from the advocates about Landlords are ALL just greedy un compassionate money grubbing sleaze bags. Sorry but I resent that kind of emotional drama. In closing- I do not have all the answers to this truly heartbreaking situation. Don’t believe for a moment that most Landlords in Oregon are not good fair minded citizens who do have compassion for our needy. But you cannot blame a whole industry for the actions of a few misguided Landlords. Respectfully Dennis Patterson- dennisfpatterson@gmail.com
