Lumineers vs. Braces

Lumineers and braces are not in direct conflict. Lumineers are cosmetic and braces are orthodontic. Patients considering both may not know the difference between the categories, as discussed below.

Cosmetic dentistry
This field involves smile makeover via aesthetic upgrades. You may settle on teeth whitening as the best way to improve your smile. You can do this at home using a variety of at-home, over-the-counter methods, or you can treat yourself to chairside whitening for several immediate shades of brightness. Another important facet of cosmetic dentistry is veneers. These ceramic laminates offer no drastic reconstruction, but act as shields for teeth that are misshapen, broken, or stained. Lumineers are simply a specialized, “no-prep” version of veneers.

Orthodontics
This field involves smile makeover via modification. Both traditional braces and their variants — lingual braces and self-ligating braces — are common orthodontic treatments. Another, more recent orthodontic product is Invisalign, which straightens teeth using clear aligners for a better visual experience.
Cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics do not need to overlap. You and your dentist can decide which is more appropriate at your consult. If you’re interested in a form of smile makeover that’s both minimal and effective, Lumineers may be right for you.
