In 1858, there was no one living in Denver area except for migrating camps of Cheyenne and Arapaho Native Americans. 30 years later, Colorado was a state and had a population of about 200,000. Some gold prospectors who were involved in the Pikes’ Peak Gold Rush decided to establish a settlement in the South Platte River banks. This settlement was known as Montana City, a mining city that is now the City of Denver.
