Them

Pat has always been impressed with status.
But Ro protests how little it matters.
And every time I look in the mirror I see another stranger.
Dorothy gives easily her infectious smile.
Then takes it away again with her eyes.
Judy preaches that I should be born again.
While Janis limits the conversation to the merits of men.
Jean has hardened from being too sensitive.
And I try to remember how I got to this time.
Jennifer and Wayne are truly good friends, sustaining
Wayne’s protest: “I’m right, I’m right again!”
Elaine is nice-nasty but that’s right for her.
Margaret has always wanted a Thunderbird
but
settled for diamonds
and
Jeanne has traveled into the infinite series of moments of
now
and
Joel says
that I’m still silly and tells me where a woman’s place… is and
John says everything three times and Judy and Harry search the spirit world for answers and Tony’s big scheme fails again and everyone’s house is increasing in value and the kids are yelling for new batteries.
