I’ll also note: I was taught skim reading in the mid-80s as a high-schooler, using printed texts. Ostensibly, the purpose was to train us to grasp “the gist” of an article quickly, so that we’d be prepared for a future inundated with data.
I think the practice of skimming, more so than the medium, is what damages our ability to comprehend material. True, a screen can encourage this, but overall this stems (I think) from not being taught /how/ to think, which requires deep-thought. If we’re incentivized to prize getting through material the fastest to get the “reward”, we’ll reap the benefits of thinking that is broad, yet shallow.
The evidence of this abounds on social media and even now in workplaces. No one has the time or the desire to stop and think, anymore.
