I disagree! Option C is certainly heard. It has no impact on the outcome of the race, but it’s recorded and greatly influences political strategy and can even change party policy positions. Presidents elected with a sizeable popular majority are said to have a mandate, while those without much popular vote wield less political influence.

If even a single state went third party, it could make the results of electoral college inconclusive, then the president would be decided through a different process.
