Okay, for me, an important issue is trying to figure out my own financial vision first, before even trying to pitch or sell investors:
- Why should this project or creative endeavor be a business?
- What would financial investment facilitate that I wouldn’t be able to accomplish otherwise?
- What will the relationship with customers be like? Who will they be and why will they be paying us money?
- Who will be employed? What roles will they peform? If there won’t be other employees, how will I spend money from investment and revenue? What things justify financial expense, and not just my personal time?
I have lots of ideas for projects and creative endeavors, but I really struggle to find good answers to these questions. If you have any insights, or write more about this in the future I would greatly appreciate that.
I would like to find a project or creative endeavor that I could turn into a business. I think that is one way I could offer more value to society, and also find more personal fulfillment.
And yet, any time finance comes into the equation I have HUGE reservations and a lot of trepidation.
Part of it is because I have unusual political ideas as well as a radical positions on Intellectual Property. I don’t want these to interefere with business relationships or investor expectations, and yet these things are important to me personally and an important part of my vision. I can be somewhat flexible, and accomodate, but the way a product is monetized is very important to me.
My projects are mostly software. For example, I have been developing a drawing app:
Sketch or take notes on a scaled writing surface for better control.play.google.com
It’s still crude, but it’s come a long way. I use it personally, but I don’t know if others will find it useful. It’s like a catch-22. I don’t want to develop it beyond what I personally find essential, unless others show interest, and other people are unlikely to be interested unless I can make it accessible and compelling for them.
In my mind there is a separation between physical necessities like food, transit, and housing, and past-times like entertainment and creativity.
I spend almost no money on anything besides the bare essentials, so I have a hard time justifying a narrative where customers spend money on something that isn’t essential as well.
I would also potentially like to do a business where I help people meet basic needs, but my lifestyle is pretty unusual. I ride a skateboard for transit and sometimes a bike, and I wash all my clothes by hand. Not many people live similar lifestyles, and those who do don’t spend much money, it doesn’t seem like a good source of revenue.
At the same time, I don’t need much money to survive and be comfortable, and even feel fulfilled. I see financial income as a constraint out of necessity and not a personal objective. I don’t have any desire to earn a lot of income. But I would like earn income from activities that I also feel provide value to society.
For now, a simple part time job meets my needs more than adaquetely, but I really want more fulfilling financial relationships, and to spend my time on more compelling productive activities.
Any thoughts or insights in response or in future articles will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
